NAP State Tax Credits Info
The Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) exists to encourage Virginia taxpayers to donate to non-profits serving in predominantly low-income communities. After we complete the extensive application and reporting process each year, the state assigns us a limited number of tax credits to offer to our faithful donors – you! And, the more quickly we give out the few we have, the more we can request in the future. Please note: Gifts (“grants”) from Donor-Advised Funds CANNOT be used towards receiving NAP tax credits (e.g. PayPal Giving fund, Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, Vanguard Charitable, Schwab Charitable, National Christian Foundation, GoFundMe, Meta/Facebook or similar 3rd-party entities).
We apportion our tax credits according to the following:
▸ For a donation to qualify for NAP, the minimum is $500 for an individual and $616 for a business. If desired, we can add together several donations from a particular semester (Jan.-June or July-Dec.), as long as they total at least $500/semester.
▸ All state forms must be completed.
▸ After the state reviews the paperwork (which takes several weeks), we send you an Award Certificate for use with tax filing.
▸ New donors to our NAP Tax Credits receive a 50% tax credit on gifts between $500 and $4,999 and a 65% tax credit on donations of $5,000 or more (e.g. $1,000 donation reduces your state taxes by $500; a $6,000 donation reduces them by $3,900).
▸ Legacy donors to our NAP Tax Credits receive a 65% tax credit on all gifts over $500.
