As the school year comes to an end, we have transitioned to group tutoring and special activities since our dear tutors have left us for the summer. This gave us the opportunity to partner with our fantastic friends at the PB&J Fund so that our students could experience making a healthy meal and learn valuable safety practices in the kitchen. For many of our students, this was their first time doing anything like this. As we stepped off the bus, their eyes were filled with excitement!
The PB&J Fund gave our students a lesson on what comprises a healthy meal, the proper technique for cutting food, the importance of washing fresh fruit and vegetables, how to follow a recipe, and ways that our trash and left over food can be turned into compost for a garden. Students made fruit salad with a lime, honey, and Greek yogurt dressing. The kitchen was abuzz with students zesting limes, cutting fruit, measuring and mixing, and tons of teamwork. One of the biggest hits in the kitchen was the dishwashing station, which included a huge sprayer. Never have I seen so many kids wanting to wash dishes! It was definitely a super fun, memorable experience and many of the students told me as we were leaving that they were going to start helping their parents cook at home! Thank you so much, PB&J Fund, for such an awesome experience!!
